This is one of those Slice of Life books. The reader is given a 30-minute glimpse into the lives of the occupants of an apartment building. In those 30 minutes so many things happen. I was left with an appreciation for how interconnected all our lives are. And then there is the fish. You'll just have to read it yourself to find out what that means exactly. Once the reader gets through the first two chapters, the story is hilarious. Told from the perspective of Ian, the goldfish, who jumped out of his fishbowl on the 23th balcony. He reviews his life during his fall and observes the activities of the building's occupants. Wonderful characters!
Great book. Clever writing style, amusing plot. I'd recommend it.
Fishbowl was a bit absurd but drew me in and kept me in suspense.
This will sound insipid and perhaps is unfair but, Fishbowl, simply put, is a fun little read.
On reading the blurb about Ian the goldfish you may imagine this will be a surreal, laugh a minute story. It’s not. It’s much gentler and kinder than that. It has its amusing moments but, it’s strength lies in conveying the emotions and lives of an eclectic bunch of residents in Ian’s apartment block (Petuniah being my fave). I enjoyed it in (again perhaps unfairly) a palate cleansing way.
Eh, not that interesting. Lots of holes and needless over descriptions of pointless point of view from the fish. Our book club was unimpressed and didn't really have anything to discuss.
So beautifully crafted. A colleague told me her book club was reading it, so I checked it out. She still hasn't finished it, and I can't shut up about it. Such a rich and thoughtful vignette of the intersects in the microcosms of individual lives.
I liked the concept and characters. I didn't like the repetitive nature of the viewpoints. I really enjoyed the perspectives but I felt that the points of view could have been more diverse and less repetitive. Some of the situations were far fetched but if you took it as more of metaphors for life etc it made it funny and enjoyable.
